Bill Baird: Summer Is Gone
Summer Is Gone is a beautiful album from Bill Baird, all about the passage of time. I wanted to design something that could be as ephemeral as the album's subject.
This album was printed on a limited run via Talkshow records.
I wanted to create artwork that could change and shift with time.
The physical artwork depicts a simple vector graphic finished with holographic foil, pushing out different colours as light hits the sleeve.
Early exploration for the album involved exploring the many interpretations of time, from simple sun graphics to more complex sundial diagrams.
As part of the launch, we also worked closely with Bill Baird to create a truly ephemeral version of the album online, unique for every listener.
This took form as a website that created a new iteration of the album every time the site was loaded.
The format in which music is released has consistently changed over the past decade. Digital advances of course have their positive enhancements but the art of putting on an album and listening to it’s entirety has been lost. Summer Is Gone uses the positives of the digital age to create an opportunity for an audience to sit still and enjoy this musical and artistic partnership, before it disappears.
"Bill Baird’s ephemeral online album is completely unique for every listener."
The site could pick up the user’s local time at the point they visited, an arithmetic sequence formula was then created to select a track from the bank of remixes each hand mixed by Bill. One selection for each of the ten tracks on the album.
Once this sequence has been created it will not be repeated, it gets stored forever against the user’s visit.
